Aesthetic Minimalism

Can aesthetic minimalism exist as a form of feminism?

As an introvert, it was at times difficult to get on the trend train wasting my time and money on the next best trend, or the latest thing everyone was into simply because I know it wouldn’t be long before there was a new next thing. Eventually, those looks would fade and what was timeless would last. So, it wasn’t long before I decided to own up to my slightly introverted personality, and cultivate that sense of timelessness within myself.

But old habits die hard.

It seemed like every time I would try to align myself with what was more of my natural tendency, I found myself being pulled in the opposite direction with the thought that somehow all of my glorious depth would somehow disappear if I didn’t make myself look significant upon first glance. Then I realized that all of my glorious depth didn’t need to be on display for everyone to see, and also, I wanted to be selective of who I allowed to swim in those depths.

As I became more selective, I found that not only did my creativity grow, but so did my budget. I no longer wasted my money on things that I would only wear or use a few times before they became obsolete, and I began to have more versatility with my style.

Best of all, I’m changing my life, intentionally.

If aesthetic revolution is about breaking the rules of how we understand beauty beyond the accepted images that commerce provides, then aesthetic minimalism can be the be was the vehicle for that revolution. Taking the power of my choice and using it to carefully curate the items and products that fit my lifestyle, budget and ethics, was like a bottomless carpet bag; a contained space filled with infinite possibilities.

I’ll continue to post about my journey through minimalism from an aesthetic lens, as an abstraction for an aesthetic lifestyle.

The power of our choice can create ethical commerce, diverse images of beauty, and deeper authenticity.
