Paradox: Freedom found within Limitation

Creative types are said to detest discipline. They are painted as the free spirited and aloof, filled with dreams of utopia, unaware of the “realities” of the world. Oftentimes the illusion of the dream is more alluring that the reality of it. Creative lifestyles as portrayed by the dream machine of Hollywood or the hype of the trend always have hidden and ugly truths.

The truth and paradox is: Freedom is created though setting limitations.

Every creative project has parameters, a set of requirements and outcomes that are specifically expected by the client, and perhaps their audience. All creatives know that should those parameters not be met, would be costly.

Protecting your creative lifestyle depends solely on your ability to outline your limitations, what you will and will not do, and stick with them. Respectable clients will understand and the unfortunate and demanding clients will fall away, off to find others as dramatic and needy as themselves. Those of us who understand this lifestyle know all too well that an absolute dedication to your limits is necessary in order to differentiate your personal and professional life. Within those limits, challenging yourself to do what needs to be done within a strict timeline becomes a game that always leaves you in the winning position, holding the gold, and ready to take on the next challenge.
